Home Energy Savings – Basics of Working with Appliances Safely

It may seem intimidating in tweaking appliances for greater energy efficiencies. It may be just a simple cleanup of dust in an appliance to allow for more efficient heat exchange for greater energy efficiencies or longer machine lifetimes. Many are intimidated by household appliances. Yet for the most part, outside of control electronics (which are essentially modular and cannot be repaired – they must be replaced wholesale and swapped in and out), most home appliances have changed little over the years. It’s as simple as that. Hence no need to be intimidated by the process.

Does Polythene hurt our environment?

Polythene (or Polyethylene) is the most used and readily available plastic, with an annual production of approximately 80 million tonnes. It is used primarily in consumer and industrial packaging. Polythene was first created by accident in 1898, by a German scientist called Hans von Pechmann, whilst heating diazomethane. A white, waxy substance was created, which Pechmann and his colleagues named “polymethylene”.

Office Recycling Tips

Offices have been so renowned for producing excessive waste that laws have had to be implemented to prevent hazardous materials from being disposed of in a regular wheelie bin. Allegedly twice as much waste is produced from commercial buildings than residential ones. In 2010 the environment minister dismissed the suggestion of implementing general recycling laws on businesses. Instead he decided that encouraging companies to recycle would be more effective than forcing them to do so. However, disposing of hazardous waste inappropriately is still illegal.

3 Questions to Ask a Prospective Solar Lease Company

It’s no secret that, although dropping quickly, the upfront cost for installing a home solar system is still far too high for the average family trying to go green on a budget. Creating a home that runs almost completely on solar power requires far more than just slapping a few photovoltaic panels on your roof. Depending on the size and sophistication of the system you choose, upfront installation costs could be anywhere from $10,000 to $40,000, and even with tax incentives and rebates, this is still a big investment for many individuals and businesses.

Reducing Standby Power on Home and Business Appliances

There is a common saying which is generally attributed to Ben Franklin which tells us that “a penny saved is a penny earned.” This is true for nearly everything, especially when it comes to your electrical bill. A huge drain on the grid is the power and energy consumed by devices which are in standby mode, not even being used at the time. For instance, your phone charger which stays plugged in, your microwave, your DVD player and other home audio/video appliances and computers. The list could go on and on, but you get the point.

The Unforgotten Home Energy Heating & Cooling Saving Agent

When people and homeowners think of energy and energy savings they often think in raw terms. If I turn off this bulb I will save x kw hours.  If I buy a more energy efficient appliance I will so much power units / money costs a month or a given amount over a lifetime of the appliance – new or replaced. Yet it’s the Chinese water torture the tick tick tick 24 hours a day , 7 days a week that innocuously adds up to give big values and potentially big cost and energy savings. We all want to be green after all.  There are only so many resources to go around in our world so to speak. Read the rest of this entry »

Scotland’s Renewable Energy

Scotland has become one of the world leaders in renewable energy production, and in the last few years the country has taken huge strides towards maximising the potential of its huge natural resource base. Concerns over climate change and peak oil production (essentially the time when global petroleum extraction reaches the maximum level before going into terminal decline) have pushed the subject of renewable energy to the upper levels of the political agenda, and the ambitious target set by the government in 2007 to have 31% of the country’s power generation produced from renewable sources by 2011 have already been exceeded. The long term aim is to have the share grow to between 50-80% by 2020, again an ambitious target but one which Scotland is already well on track to accomplish with a number of Scottish electric companies investing heavily in the new technology.

Energy Consumption at Server Farms and Data Centers

If you are unaware of the massive quantities of energy required to power data centers and server farms, you may want to start looking into the numbers. They can be quite alarming. One data center can consume as much energy as a small town, including about 5,000 homes. Some of the numbers tell us that data centers are hugely wasteful as well, drawing about 60% of their power during idle times when they are doing nothing. Energy efficiency can oftentimes be ignored, especially when high growth industries are chasing after dollars instead of efficiency. But the learning curve will be kind to these folks as further advances in technology will not only increase the efficiency of such centers, but also make the energy they are consuming cheaper and greener.

BioMass Heating – The Benefits and Different Types

With the world’s fossil fuel and natural gas reserves becoming ever more scarce, the price of energy derived from these sources is likely to continue to climb. In mid 2011, UK energy companies all raised prices across the board, some by as much as 25%. This was blamed on the price of wholesale oil and gas rising and fluctuating, combined with political uncertainties and civil unrest in many production countries. The energy companies claimed they could no longer absorb the increase in prices, so had to pass it on.
